Tuesdays Jan 8, 15, 22, 29
7 - 9 pm

The art of crochet has only been practiced in the last couple hundred years.  Much like knitting, you are interlocking loops of yarn to create a fabric, except crochet is much faster and is done using a hook rather than two needles. And more good news... mistakes are an easy fix!  In this class we will learn all the basic stitches used in crochet while completing 4 washcloths building upon the skills learned in each class.   Perfect for the beginner looking to learn this wonderful skill or the fibre worker looking to add to their repertoire.  We will also learn to read patterns (both written and charted) and talk about finishing techniques

Learn to Spin on a Spinning Wheel - Sold Out

Spinning is a very rewarding experience.  Making your own yarn dates backs thousands and thousands of years and connects people today with those of the past.  Spinning is a very simple, yet scientific process which basically amounts to adding twist to fibre.  Wheels are a useful tool because they make spinning yarn faster and more productive.  We will learn about the parts of the wheel so you are comfortable with using your equipment and we spin yarn and ply it into a 2 ply yarn.  We will also learn about wheel maintenance and  taking care of your equipment.

Breed Study - Sold Out

Picture
Forget everything you thought you knew about wool and come learn with Susie as we look at different sheep breed fibre and yarns.   Firstly, all yarn is not wool and all wool is not yarn. There are hundreds of sheep species and many cross breeds within those lines.
Each breed has special characteristics that can be pros or cons depending on how you look at them or what sort of project you may have in mind.  Not all wool is itchy!  There are very fine fleeces that anyone would love to wear next to their skin to coarse wools that may feel like barbed wire and everything in between.  We will discuss the different classes of wool and talk about which wools are suited to certain projects.  We will also tour The Naked Sheep and talk about the yarns and fibres Nicole stocks.  If you have a specific project in mind let’s discuss that as well!

Toe Up Socks - Fleegle Heel

Picture
There are many methods to knitting socks.  Finding the right one that works for you will keep you a happy knitter which in turn keeps the dreaded Second Sock Syndrome at bay.  In this class we are going to learn how to knit socks from the toe up which means you can try on your socks as you go or use up that whole skein of special yarn (or handspun).  We will quickly go over sock anatomy, measurements, sizing and designing.  We will discuss a couple different approaches to starting the toe so you find what works best for you.
Our focus will be the Fleegle Heel as it is a good fit, easy to customize and it will take all the fear out of a heel turn but we will touch on other heel choices.    We will end by casting off using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind off.  Feel free to use double pointed needles, magic loop or 9” circular’s in this class and I suggest finding a fun yarn that will keep you and your needles happy.  (Dye for Ewe self-striping, Cog Yarns & West Yorkshire Spinners sock yarn are great examples)
*Must know how to knit, purl and work in the round
